Diablo II Remake Interview with David Brevik
Posted By: GamerDating - April 27, 2017
Since the announcement of official StarCraft remastering the community has asked "Will Diablo 2 get an official remaster?".
Top fansite (I'm sure you guys will remember) Diabloii.net's Xanth interviewed David Brevik and talked about Diablo 2 and the challenges of making a remastered Diablo 2.
The pair discuss my favourite mode Hardcore mode and how it was originally designed to be the default mode in Diablo, but decided to add it back into Diablo 2 after consideration.
One of the major discussions was the challenges about remastering Diablo 2. Brevik talks about the world and how it works with tiles. It's not the graphics overhaul, but the actual gameplay and the feel.
In the podcast/interview David Brevik shares how the tech of the 2D Grid made the game "feel" in a certain way, and most gamers have at some point in their gaming career felt how a games engine "feels".
"If you do a remaster, this is going to sound terrible, I am going to sound like an old fogey here, but kids these days don’t understand how games were made back then. They were nothing like they’re made today. Everybody would just make 3D artwork and put it on a 3D grid which works except for it doesn’t work. Because the moment that you change the fundamental way that you interact with the game and you move around the world, you’re changing the game.
"On a fundamental level that can not be really comprehended unless you're a programmer that has done this kind of thing before… if they do a Diablo 2 Remaster, it’s going to be difficult to make it feel exactly like the same game. They could do it but they will have to go out of their way to ensure that they are simulating the way that the game works in 2D instead of making it 3D, if that makes sense".
