Scam Alert! Fake Minecraft App Found in Apple App Store

Late last night, Reddit user verynayce brought Minecraft II, a mobile app available on iOS, to the attention of the /r/gaming subreddit. This app claims to be the sequel to the wildly popular and currently first place app, Minecraft: Pocket Edition. It lists for the same price, $10.99 in the US, and is somehow all the way up at number four on the Top Charts despite a one star rating and clear reviews that say this is a scam.
The app isn’t listed as developed by Mojang, but rather by someone called “Scott Cawthorn.” Sound familiar? Just familiar enough to fool a good amount of people it seems. Scott Cawthon is the creator behind Five Nights at Freddy’s - another franchise that has been used to scam fans out of money in the mobile market. There is also a Mortal Kombat rip off that has been bringing money to some random trademark swiper.
The description from the Apple App Store:
FINALLY, MINECRAFT II HAS COME TO THE APP STORE THIS CHRISTMAS, EXCLUSIVELY!
Minecraft is a game about breaking and placing blocks. Minecraft II is taking those activities to a whole new level of excellence and uniqueness. At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things.
Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles. Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs.
Craft, create, and explore alone, or with friends on mobile devices or Windows 10.
Eurogamer picked up the story this morning and downloaded the app. What they found was “a terrible top-down swipe game in which zombies attack Scorpion from Mortal Kombat.” Whats more, after a few minutes of playing the unsatisfying game, it crashed the reviewer’s phone.
According to the boot up screen, the app is copyrighted to someone named Viktor Todorov who appears to have a youtube channel we won’t give a link to. Eurogamer tracked him down, you can check out their story (with a link if you are curious) here.
We will see how this plays out. We are hoping the entire book gets thrown at this guy. There is a good chance since Mojang is already on it.
